Alliance for Rural Electrification (ARE) History

The Alliance for Rural Electrification (ARE) was founded in 2006 by a group of European companies and institutions that recognized the need for a platform to promote rural electrification through renewable energy technologies. The founding members included companies such as Sunlabob Renewable Energy, TTAfrica, and the European Renewable Energy Council (EREC).

In its early years, ARE focused on raising awareness about the potential of renewable energy technologies for rural electrification and advocating for policies and regulations that support their deployment. The association also facilitated networking and knowledge sharing among its members, and provided technical assistance and capacity building services to support the development of rural electrification projects.

Over time, ARE's membership grew to include a diverse range of actors, including private sector companies, NGOs, development agencies, and research institutions, reflecting the growing recognition of the importance of rural electrification for sustainable development.

In 2014, ARE established a permanent Secretariat in Brussels, Belgium, to support its expanding membership and activities. Since then, the association has continued to play a leading role in promoting the use of renewable energy solutions for rural electrification, and has been actively involved in shaping policy discussions and initiatives related to energy access and sustainable development at the national, regional, and international levels.
